BRACKETOLOGY, October 2016

Here at Lower Merion and Blue Bell Orthodontics, we are taking a moment this month to reflect upon those loved ones that are battling or have battled breast cancer.  According to the American Cancer Association, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States.  It is estimated that over 246,660 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer before the end of 2016.

Thankfully, there are currently over 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the nation as well.  It is a hard fight, but advances in research and treatment have resulted in improvements in patient care and prognosis.

Many of the risk factors for breast cancer cannot be affected by our daily choices.  However, there are some healthy habits we can focus on that may reduce our risk for developing breast cancer.  Eating a healthy diet, avoiding smoking and alcohol as adults, and exercising regularly can help to reduce the chance of developing many types of diseases, including breast cancer.  So do your best to eat healthily and get outside and move.

We have plenty of mouth guards to help keep your braces safe during competitive sporting activities and high intensity exercise.  We even have pink in case you want to show your support!  We will be doing our best to be active and healthy as a team so that we will be in top shape to take care of you and your smile.

Here are some easy ways to show your support:

  • Think Pink! Wear the color pink to help raise awareness, honor survivors and remember those who were lost.  Here are some easy ways to show off your pink:

o   Choose pink color ties for your braces.

o   Wear a pink mouth guard.

o   Make a pink ribbon lapel.

  •  Shop for the Cause

o   Look for the Pink Ribbon: Many companies produce pink versions of products that support breast cancer research and organizations.

o   Philadelphia Premium Outlets Pink Event: For the entire month of October, a donation of $10 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation at the outlet information center will earn you a 25% discount card valid at participating shops.

  • Move for the Cause: Participate in any of the following events to raise money for research, scholarships and other breast cancer support programs:

o   Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure 60 mile Trek (Oct.14-16)

It may be too late to register, but show your support by cheering for and handing
out waters to walkers! Or sign up now for the 2017 Mother’s Day Race for the
Cure.

o   Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk

Memorial Hall, West Fairmont Park (Oct. 15th)

Thank you all again and we look forward to seeing you show your support for survivors everywhere!
